the poem of my life (another meme from jc)

“Put your media player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.”

TUMBLE OUTTA BED AND I STUMBLE TO THE KITCHEN

another saturday night and i ain’t got nobody
i’m gonna walk away from love, gonna walk away, gonna walk away!
it’s always the same
and i can do the frug
at the dark end of the street
under your wheels, the hope of spring
life lands a crushing blow
i’m in the sky when i’m on the floor
i’m only one step ahead of heartbreak
this must be the place
if i go a million miles away
a man walks out of his apartment
it may have been camelot
well you know there ain’t no doubt
my old jacknife is always on me
try as he might he’s unable to speak
there’s nothing to do here
i cried through many endless nights
do you derive joy when someone else succeeds?
oh wake me please when this is over

(DOLLY PARTON, sam cooke, david ruffin, justice, rilo kiley, percy sledge, new pornographers, jimmy ruffin, le tigre, aretha franklin, jawbreaker, sam cooke, regina spektor, billy bragg, sleater kinney, ladyhawk, stars, cold war kids, the elgins, alanis morissette, great lake swimmers)

huh. well, that’s kinda depressing.

  1. EVERYONE

    Contrary to popular belief
    Look at me with uncertainty
Eli, the barrow boy of the old town
What a beautiful face I have found in this place
I am waiting ’til I don’t know when
    The mighty countenance divided
Well, I dreamed I saw the knights in armour coming
Went to the museum, red brother
All the time we spent in bed
    I remember you well
Are there no blinders on lights that blare white noise on the eyes
What gives, what helps the intuition?
If I could open my eyes
And if the snow buries my neighbourhood
Every night my dream’s the same
There are kids, lots of kids, who put the law inside a circle
Something filled up my heart with nothing
Diggin’ the hole a whole lot deeper now
That means no where I come from
An inventory has been taken of every belonging
You think I wouldn’t have them.

  2. What a lovely idea. I cheated and put in 21, but the last one actually rhymes and I can divide them in threes.

I think I’ll call it “Dearie Me”

Let the waitress put the chairs up
Hey man don’t say I didn’t warn you
Why don’t you ever want to play?

Sometimes it’s hard to say even one thing true
We the dead, we the dead find a country road
    Wake up you sleepyhead!

Who gives a fuck about a oxford comma?
There are code breakers with lines well tapped
    Why do birds suddenly appear?

Don’t wanna work in a building downtown
If I had a new house on the same old street
I, I, I, I Will burn, burn, burn my every book

    Riding on this know-how
I forgot what my father said
I was looking at you from the back of the room

All along you were here despite your absence
Ladies and gentlemen, you’ve heard the soul for sound
    Oh, oh dearie me

    Goddamn motherfucking bank again
The flower said, “I wish I was a tree”
Well I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee

(The Weakerthans, Luke Doucet, The eakerthans, The Weepies, Final Fantasy, David Bowie, Vampire Weekend, Calexico, Ian Ballamy, Arcade Fire, The Olympics, Final Fantasy, Kings of Convenience, David Bowie, Herman Dune, High Places, RJD2, Lily Allen, Dave Tough, Kimya Dawson, The Be Good Tanyas)

    @ hawkeye: i commented back @ your blog… i’m stoked that you dropped by…

@ pball: hey, no worries if you don’t want to put in the effort, but i really want to know: what were the bands from these songs?

  5. I put them on my blog post for reference, but here they are:

(RADIOHEAD, K-OS, Great Lake Swimmers, The Decemberists, Neutral Milk Hotel, Arcade Fire, Mirah, Neil Young (covered by KD Lang), Bruce Cockburn (covered by Steve Bell), Sufjan Stevens, Leonard Cohen, Sarah Harmer, Feist, Death Cab for Cutie, The Arcade Fire (x2), Dar Williams, The Arcade Fire, Carissa’s Weird, Joanna Newsom, Against Me!, Ani Difranco)

ps. i love your taste in music – that goes to hawkeye and feral.

    …is pure genius.

looking at these, i am struck: we are such canadians! and i don’t mean anything grossly patriotic about that statement, just that it’s interesting how prevalent canadian artists are in each of our poems… even with the motown weighing mine down, i still have 5/21.
